Recap 2/4/2015

Just as a final reminder that we are officially stationed at our new building forWednesday nights - only had one person forget on their way to youth group :) Anyway here are a couple of upcoming events:

Youth Serve Wednesday - February 18th we are serving at the Saint Francis House as a youth group. There are two shifts for us as they only need between 5 and 7 volunteers at a time. The first group will be getting there at 5:30 p.m. to help prepare and possibly start serving the meal. Then the second group will be arriving at 6:30 to replace them. They will finish serving and then help with cleaning up. We will meet at the church and depart from there as a group for each shift (first shift at 5:15, and second shift at 6:15). If there are any questions please feel free to get a hold of me!

Youth Worship Night - February 21st 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is another Saturday worship night for the youth to come together. Whether your youth is interested in learning some basics on the guitar, bass guitar, piano, or maybe even drums, or simply wants to come and be a part of the fellowship through singing or listening. This is really a great time to continue to build upon the relationships and community already in place within the youth at King of Glory. We will be meeting at the church for the first time this month!

Go for the Gold Family Event! Join us on Friday, February 27, from 6:00-8:00pm for an evening of Olympic themed food, t-shirt art, and games.  We will also take a look at 1 Corinthians 9:24 and learn how we are to run the race of faith!  This event is for the entire family!  To Register for this event, sign up on the KOG website or through the connection cards on Sudnday and indicate each family member's t-shirt size.

Student Ministries Mission Trip: Coming up this summer we are going to be doing something a little different by staying in Sioux Falls for our Mission Trip. I am really excited for this opportunity to serve our community of Sioux Falls in many ways. The main focus will be on a VBS outreach. This will be in partnership with King of Glory's VBS but will also have a focus on trying to reach out to a multi-cultural group through Kings Kloset, our multi-cultural partnership with Pastor Samuel's church, as well as some open invitations to different areas of Sioux Falls. Along with this focus, we will also be partnering with several other ministries in Sioux Falls during the mornings and afternoons to get a wide variety and idea of the mission work being done here in our own city.

Pickerel Dates are out for this coming summer camps. Senior high (entering into 9th grade - graduating 12th grade) is June 21st - June 27th. Junior high camp (entering 6th grade - entering 8th grade) July 26th - July 31st. For more information go

Wednesday night Recap:
In middle school we are taking two weeks to look at a few Old Testament stories that are not as well know. This past week we looked at part of the life of Josiah in 2 Kings 22. Josiah starting ruling as King at age 8! And through his leadership he did what was right in the eyes of God. The remainder of this chapter goes on to explore how Josiah and his people found the Book of the Law and the response of Josiah. Once Josiah hears the truths in this book he tears his close and weeps of the things that he and his people have been doing. He hears the truth and responds knowing that it is the truth and the way of the Lord. God's answer to him was peace and burial with his ancestors without seeing the disaster he has promised for the land. First it goes to show that God can use anyone for His work and leadership (even an 8 year old king!). Secondly, it also goes to show the importance of repentance and response to the Word of the Lord. Just as Josiah wept and cried out upon hearing the scripture, we too should be turning from our own sins and disobedience and turn to the Lord.

In high school we took the time to discuss the questions that the youth had through our two week study on dating and sex. There were several great questions including - is it wrong to date in high school/is it worth it? How far is too far, where is the line? If you have sex before marriage is that part of God's plan? We started out by splitting into a girls and guys group to simply discuss and talk about their opinions/thoughts on these questions. We then brought it back to a large group and brought together our thoughts. For some of the questions there is an easier answer and one that scripture speaks to. For others, we took a look back at how we are called to be in relationship with people in general before getting into the specific question. Ultimately it comes back to our thoughts, heart, and desires in the midst of our actions. Are we caring for those that we are dating or are we simply trying to be like others? Is it about ourselves or about the other person? Are we trying to please God, or are we trying to please people? Through this study and questions, it might be a perfect time to follow up with your student and talk about some of these questions together as well. I didn't always give a firm answer and this could be a great time to draw upon your experiences and discus this subject with your student with an easy starting point.

Please continue to be praying for this youth ministry. For the students as they face this battle between flesh and spirit. Pray for one another as parents as you walk together in parenthood. And please pray for those who volunteer and help with the youth ministry as we try to be a light and example for your students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email, text or call me!
