Understanding Poverty Classes

Please join us at First Evangelical Free Church for this special four week class where we will seek God's guidance on how to serve those struggling in poverty. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and be challenged in our day to day living. The teaching will provide a biblical foundation for our approach to poverty and practical ways to live out the teaching.

We will answer the following questions while studying the Bible together and engage in conversation about the topic of poverty.

  • Why should Christians be focused on poverty?
  • What are the roots of poverty?
  • How do we do evangelism in a poverty context?
  • How do we serve or help people in poverty in healthy ways?
  • What are common misunderstandings we have when it comes to poverty and how do they hurt our approach?

The class will be taught by Barry Termaat and Rich Merkouris. Barry and his wife Jill sold their home in SE Sioux Falls to intentionally move into a struggling neighborhood in downtown. Barry brings a passion for people and real life experience of engaging with a variety of different people on a regular basis. Rich Merkouis is a Pastor at King of Glory church in SF and helped start the SF Ministry Center along with Compassion Child Care. Rich has been leading various community efforts to fight poverty for the last eight years.

Join us on Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. during the month of June. We will meet on June 6, 13, 20 & 27.  The classes will take place at First Evangelical Free Church located at 2601 W. 69th St. in Sioux Falls. The church is a couple blocks west of the interestion of Western Ave and 69th St.
