Student Ministries Plan Summer Mission Trip

King of Glory Student Ministries is planning a summer mission trip to Martin, S.D., on July 7-12.

The mission trip, which is being coordinated through a mission group called YouthWorks, is open to all students who are currently in middle school or high school. According to Kyle Helder, student ministries coordinator, that space at Martin that week is almost full. Presently there are enough spots for eight students and two adults to go on the trip. Helder added that the cost of the trip is $279 per person, however that figure does not include transportation costs.

Surrounded by the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux Indian reservations, the town of Martin, S.D. offers unique access to the Lakota culture. There also are plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors by hunting and fishing, or taking advantage of local golf courses, bike paths and athletic fields. Just like the reservations it borders, however, the town struggles with poverty and the sometimes-tense relations between ethnic groups. The mission team will shine the light of Christ in this community through home improvement projects and by serving the local children and elderly residents.

The reason why we chose Martin, South Dakota is to continue to open student’s eyes to service opportunities abroad and at home.

"Our goal in Student Ministries is that students will have multiple opportunities in multiple forms to grow and serve so that a location or destination doesn't become the desire for the trip but the goal becomes the service to our neighbors for the glory of Jesus Christ," said Kyle Helder, student ministries coordinator.

Student Ministries at King of Glory has created a rotation to continue to provide an array of these opportunities. Last summer students went on an international mission trip. This summer students will go on a national/local mission trip. Next year students will be given the opportunity to go on an adventure trip that focuses on spiritual growth and development.
